A Good but not Great printer / scanner – One Year Update at the endI bought this to replace an ailing Epson Artisan 810, which I had for a number of years and did very well. Printing CD/DVDs was an important feature, which limited the field. Have been using it now for a few months, so let me tell you about this printer.First, let’s be real, this is a hundred dollar printer, not a five hundred dollar printer, and it’s built like what it is. In places the plastic body and guides seem flimsy, but if you take care they should do okay. The Artisan had similar components and lasted for years. However … the paper tray seems to have less capacity, and the tray for photo paper is for 4×6 or 5×7 only. And the CD/DVD printing tray comes out, and needs to be positioned in the correct slot to use, as opposed to the one that was internal on the Artisan. There is a rear slot feed, which takes some getting used to, but that is useful for envelopes.Print quality is fine, there is a preset for draft quality which saves ink at the expense of lighter print, a reasonable trade off. Photo quality is also good enough to frame, at least for the work that I do.The scanner is a flatbed with an ADF. In general the automatic feeder works well. It has occasionally jammed on a piece of paper, and one needs to remove the bottom pad of the lift up section to free the paper. A bit tricky to get the pad placed correctly until you get used to where the slots are. Scanning quality is good, and it scans to JPG, TIF, PNG, PDF and searchable PDF, although I have not used that last feature often. The scanning software is a bit kludgy, in that you have to jump through two menus to set the name of the file and the directory. While you can preview the scan before committing, you can’t enlarge the preview to see any detail. And if scanning a multipage document, you can’t open a document to add a page. Editing only before saving the entire package. Also, file names cannot contain a period, so naming a file as “2020.04.06.jpg” does not work. Most importantly, and the biggest reason I cannot give this printer a higher rating, is that the software that connects the printer to WiFi appears to be buggy, and frequently loses connection. With the router in the same room, I was able to scan a document, then a few minutes later the software was unable to connect with the scanner. Only a reboot of the computer and printer would reset the system, for a while. I never had this problem with the Artisan, which maintained a stable WiFi connection under the same conditions. Ultimately, I broke down and used a USB cable to connect the device, so that at least it works when I need it to.Just to note, unlike the Artisan, this printer/scanner does not support a Fax connection. This is clearly less important than some years ago, with Fax only rarely being called upon to transfer data – scanning and Email being more common – but it is worth mentioning if that is a requirement.Perhaps if Epson improves the software to enhance operational flexibility and WiFi connectivity I would give this a high rating, but likely the unit will be obsolete before that can happen.– 11 Apr 20 update –Three other issues have come to light since I wrote this review. One, which I had experienced before but did not include in the initial review, is the annoying habit of the Epson Scan 2 software to variably display an alert when started, saying, “Unable to create a work folder in the specified location. The default location will be used instead.” No location had been specified, and there is no option to locate the work folder anywhere, nor any indication what the “default location” would be.Second, trying to integrate this scanner with a graphics program, I found that the TWAIN scanner it installed was 32 bit, in my Windows 10 64 bit system. There appears to be no way to install a 64 bit TWAIN driver, so the scanner will not interface with the graphics program, which needs a 64 bit TWAIN scanner driver. And third relates to the ADF. As I mentioned, there is a pad that encloses the paper path for the ADF, which must be removed to clear any paper jams. Well, the clear plastic over the scanning area is prone to pick up little flecks of paper or dust, creating vertical streaks on the resultant scanned image. Seems to be much more frequent than with the old Artisan, and a real pain when scanning a lot of pages with the ADF.Just some more cautionary notes to those considering this printer / scanner.– 04 May 20 –The more I use this printer/scanner, the more irritating some things become. When scanning multiple pages using the ADF, you can select to add further pages after scanning, and you can rotate, delete, or change the order of pages in the edit screen, but you cannot change any scanning parameters. So if you scanned a 5 page document with the ADF, you cannot add an additional page scanned with the flatbed, nor change from color to monochrome, or other changes. You also cannot reopen a scanned PDF to add another page, as you can with other programs. With all of these issue, have downgraded from three to two stars.Made even worse as there is no one at Epson to contact for any of these issues.Caveat emptor– 29 Mar 21 — about a year of use and more problems arise. Now, there are lines and blotches on both text and photo prints. Printing a mailing label is challenge as the blots obscure the bar code; and photos come out with black dots and lines at various places on the print. At this time I am having serious doubts about replacing this with another Epson product. Cleaning the print heads does not help, and there seems to be no way to prevent this problem. I am not a happy camper.

🙂 Great printer with an even better price.I just happened to stumble across the Epson XP-7100 while looking for a small photo printer capable of using Letter size paper. The store did not have print samples and I knew nothing about it so I put off the purchase to do some more research. I came across a PC Magazine article titled The Best Photo Printers for 2019. The XP-7100 was listed a one of seven listed as an Editors’ Choice, but the 7100 was the only Legal size printer with 2 others not fitting the bill and the remaining 4 being large formats costing 2-10 times as much. With a price of $129, I decided to take a chance. The XP-7100 arrived well packaged and heavier than expected (usually a good sign). It is a elegant contemporary design which takes up very little space and looks good anywhere. No ADF or trays sticking out. Setup was easy and straight forward with the quick setup sheet. The 4.3 inch control screen is a delight with its intuitive interface and bright touch screen. Once the ink cartridges are installed, just push the power button (the only button) and the control panels automatically tilts outward for a better viewing angle. After printing a few test sheets for printer head alignment, it was time to set up WiFi (unless you go with USB). WiFi setup was easy. Just select your network and enter its password (if secured). Last step is to install the software and driver on the computer. The CD did not auto run as it was supposed to so I manually opened the CD in File Explorer. At the root level are two app files. EPWizard.exe and Setup.exe. I ran the EPWizard.exe and everything installed fine. WiFi tried to locate the printer and it failed. This was resolved with a simple Restart of the computer. My first few prints were to test different papers and quality setting. The printer has 2 trays supporting cards, photos, envelops and basically anything A4 or Letter size and smaller. It even includes a CD tray to print on CDs. A motorized output tray retracts back into the printer (along with the control panel) when you power off. As far as construction, the port for the power cable is a little wobbly. I do not know what that is about. Some reviewers wrote the printer is flimsy. The trays do not have rollers or bearing, so yes they are a little flimsy to reduce friction, but tighten into place once fully extended. This is common among printers and helps keep cost down. As for the body, it does have thin panels (available in different colors) which are simply not acceptable for a laptop. Oh wait, this is a non-portable printer meant to, at most, be moved from place to place a few times. Remove from box and place on desk.I purchased the printer mainly for its photographic printing abilities. My first real print was a Student of the Month article (about my daughter) from the website of the local newspaper. The photo and text would be a great test of the printers capabilities so I imported the article at 300 dpi with vector text. I printed it with high quality settings and used Epson Ultra-Premium Glossy Photo Paper. The results were phenomenal. The color photo was vibrant and the blending of the 4 photo colors was seamless. Text (some of it 5pt in size) was very crisp and could rival laser printers. The printer is fast for an inkjet on high settings. I estimate around 35 seconds for the 8.5 x 11 print.I’ll add a follow up on the scanner, ADF, and media ports but for now the 7100 is a very impressive photo printer which can be had as low as $99. Of course they will make up for the losses, and then some, with ink and paper sales.

I love this printerI bought this printer because of the review for photo print quality, I was not disappointed. It has good speed and very good quality. The scanner works great as long download Epson Scan 2 software. I have not had to call for tech support

Mac users – setup hints hereMost of my printer reviews are setup instructions for my fellow macOS users. As for the print quality of this printer, both on plain and photo paper – wow, just wow. Epson ink might cost more than gold, pound for pound, but they sure do make a killer machine. That being said, it’s annoying that once the print heads get clogged you pretty much have to chuck the whole thing in the garbage. I replaced my Epson 830 FAX all-in-one with this updated model without FAX. I think I used the FAX once in all the time I’ve owned the 830 so I’m not missing that one feature on the 7100.My setup is hard-wired LAN, skip the wireless setup, and never open the included CD. Included software and drivers are never up to date. They usually give you some beta software just to get the printer shipped out the door which, when you run it, says you need to download the latest software anyway. You are always better off downloading drivers from the website. I did that. I’ve still got macOS 10.10.x and – good news, Epson still supports my operating system.I plugged in only the Ethernet and power. USB and wireless printing has never worked for me on a mac. I like to setup a static IP address so I can print via my VM’s. USB drivers fall all over themselves and tend to crash if the printer is turned off (on the mac). Wireless printing.. has made some progress, slowly over the years, but I’ll run a wire if I can.I selected wired LAN setup via the touch panel. It said to plug in the cable. It is plugged in. That’s as far as I got. I selected network status. 192.168.1.2. ok, so you’re connected via DHCP. Why can’t I modify the settings? No matter. I ran the installation script. I tried to modify the IP address via the script. No go. ok… off to the web administration page on 192.168.1.2. It immediately asked me to set an admin password. I set the IP address. So far so good. But, it wouldn’t do a firmware update and if I didn’t update it now it would be bugging me forever until I updated it.I had to manually add the printer to the system via the System Preferences. I tried firmware update once again. Nope. Although I can see the printer and get its status the printer kept telling me it couldn’t access the network. I was puzzled. After several attempts, I set the DNS/Proxy settings. Then, it would perform a firmware update. Life is good again. After printing a few samples – wow, Epson outdid themselves. Total time to install: 1 hour including installing the cartridges and aligning the print heads. Total aggravation on a scale of 1..10: (2)

Everything worked well but some setup info hard to findFirst of all, I had to go to a bricks-and-mortar store to find out where the paper tray was. I wanted to put the printer into a utility closet with an outlet and print without moving it, and until I could see the paper tray, I couldn’t purchase it. Just showing the front of the printer without the open paper tray was not enough.I set up this printer with my MacBook Pro running OS 10.14.6.The power button is all black — it lights up nicely when it. is on but is a bit difficult to find when it’s off, although the setup sheet does show the location.I had trouble getting AirPrint to work. The setup sheet gives you enough information to get what I think is called Direct Print to work over your wireless network, but that’s not enough for AirPrint — you have to set up Wifi Infrastructure Mode, and the Epson online help is no help. Using Google, I eventually found an Epson YouTube video that showed how to do this from the printer’s front control panel. Before I downloaded and used the 7100 User Guide, I also set up Epson Connect and the iPrint app, and after they did not help with AirPrint, I wondered if I would ever use them at all (but I did use iPrint, see below!). These different wireless print options and a one-sentence description of what each is good for should be on the Setup Sheet.Color print from MS Word, Excel, and Notes on iPhone and iPad worked perfectly the first time (once I had AirPrint). Then I started checking functions from the User’s Guide, including several I’ve never done with any other printer.Duplex color copy and scan worked perfectly the first time, even though my input was an old and slightlywrinkled drawing. I did both from the Automatic Feeder Tray with the printer control panel.Photo print from Preview came out really well, even though I had only Another Brand photo paper instead of the Epson Ultra Premium Glossy paper I prefer.Photo print from a camera memory card, using the front printer control panel, also came out very well (my photo wasn’t so great, so I won’t say it was excellent yet) and I was able to preview what was on the memory card and select a layout right from that panel, without my computer. I didn’t try transferring those photos from the printer to the computer because I put the memory card away before I saw that was possible, but I did confirm the Mac could see the printer over the network.I checked the printer supply levels from the printers and scanners icon in System Preferences. Finally I printed a layout of four 4×6 photos from my iPhone using iPrint. Worked fine.I am amazed at what this printer can do.

Competent and Inexpensive, But Devours InkThis printer does most things quite well. I love the auto duplex feature: you don’t have to reload the paper to print on both sides, it does it automatically. It can print on envelopes, though you have to figure out how to open the hidden back panel to get to the rear feeder. It has a multi-sheet document feeder, which is a required feature for me. I like the compact size, and how the LCD panel and paper tray automatically retract when you’re done printing (or when you select the Close Output Tray on the LCD). This gives the printer a compact and sleek look when you’re not using it, and also prevents dust from getting into the interior. It is also a very nice looking unit. But it does devour ink. I didn’t do page counts or anything, but that is my impression. You have a choice between standard size ink cartridges and XL larger capacity ones (which are the same size on the outside), and I ended up switching to XL pretty quickly. They sell combo packs of either the regular or XL, but unfortunately, the combo XL pack combines a *regular* size Black with XLs for the color cartridges, so instead I just order XL’s all individually, and there doesn’t seem to be a price difference. On the positive side, when it runs out of black ink in the main cartridge, it offers to use the alternate black that is installed as part of the color printing system, but you have to answer Yes to the popup prompt to agree to this on every print request, which is an annoyance. One other thing I should mention is that the printer is on the noisy side. It offers a “quiet” setting, but I admit I haven’t tried it, because it says it slows down printing. I had to send my first unit back due to a couple of issues with the document feeder and a streak appearing on copied or scanned pages. Tech support was helpful, and they sent me a replacement and provided free shipping back to them for the original unit. Though the replacement unit is refurbished, it is perfect, so I’m happy with my support experience.

After five weeks of use – works greatI understand that some printers may be defective from the factory and perhaps I got lucky, but I don’t understand some of these negative reviews. This printer is not cheaply made. It is made just as well as any other printer at this price point. Setup was quick and easy. I print to it from several computers and an iPad over wifi. It prints both plain black text documents and photos (if you use glossy photo paper) quite well. I have used the scanner bed and feeder several times and they work flawlessly.I purchased a complete set of high capacity ink cartridges along with the printer because I understood that the original ink cartridges were just for setup and calibration. Perhaps Epson put the wrong cartridges in my printer, but I have used it for routine home printing for five weeks, multi-page documents with color graphics and a dozen or so photos, a couple of which were full page photos, and all the original ink cartridges that came with the printer still show at least half full.I had bad experience with an Epson printer 30 years ago and had been using only HP and Canon home printers since then. I decided to give Epson another try, and so far I am glad I did.P.S after three and a half months of use. Just changed original ink cartridges yesterday. We were printing about 150 pages of partially-color text. After using it for a while, I will concede that it does feel bit more fragile than previous Canon and HP printers, but nothing has broken yet.Printer hardware and software work perfectly. It takes a while to start printing after you send a job, but prints quickly once it gets going.
