How to turn a Denon fan into a dissatisfied customer….I’ve purchased many Denon products over the past and have usually been a satisfied consumer. Not any longer. I acquired this item and installed it into my home theater cabinet. Not an easy process by any means, but it was successfully hooked up with no issues. Unfortunately, two weeks after installation the right front door hinge broke into two pieces. This is a cheap, 25 cent part that has no business being part of this unit. It is also virtually impossible to reinstall once its broken without returning the whole receiver to the factory – as their uncooperative technician told me. I will now live without the front door as I’m not about to go through the process of deinstallation, shipment to the factory, waiting for its return, and then reinstallation into the home theater system. Don’t need this aggravation with a product that carries this price tag. Last Denon product I will purchase!

Cross your fingers!!This, my 4th denon receiver purchase came about from the failure of the avr5200 in front of it. After receiving this 8500, I contacted denon’s repair contractor, panurgy, and after discussing the problem I was having (power supply), they had me ship it to them. After a short period of time after they had received it, I received an e-mail saying they could not repair it, parts no longer available. I’m talking about a $2,000 high end component, not a $200 stocking stuffer. They knew what the model number was, and they knew by my communications with them it was a power supply component. ??????????? So, on top of now owning a $2,000 paperweight, it cost me better than $200 and a busload of frustration for shipping and handling.Add to this, I spoke with both amazons board of directors and their logistics group about shipping this double boxed or to cancel the purchase. They did neither, they shipped it as is and, of course, ups being ups, when it was delivered the factory box had two punch holes in it from mishandling. This denon is a fine unit, don’t misunderstand that but: Denon is no longer denon, they have merged with Marantz and Definitive and are now Sound United, You can not purchase an extended warranty for this unit, and the factory warranty is for three years. After that, cross your fingers, or you may own a $4,000 paper weight.

13 amp channels includedThis is by far the best AV receiver I have ever bought. I have many previous Denon AVRs (4520s and 7200WA) in other systems, and in some ways this is an upgraded version with a very important difference for me, namely 13 channels of amplification. Previously with the 7200WA, I used an external 2 channel power amp to get 11 channels (4 Dolby Atmos overhead). The added two channels in my home theater setup are for front wide speakers. It’s great for a more complex setup to have 13 channels available. So far it has performed flawlessly. Not cheap, but for a Dolby Atmos / DTS:X setup, worth considering.

Massive updgrade from Mid-Range Denon AVRsI’ve been buying Denon’s middle-of-the-road AVRs for something like 20 years. I decided to upgrade my home theater, and ordered this beast. It’s taller, deeper, and heavier than all of the other AVRs I’ve had. The unit has HD music streaming with some providers, and it sounds amazing (a marked, instantly noticeable improvement in sound quality). The unit does 8K upscaling, and I think that my 4K upscaling projector has benefited greatly from the quality and color of the Denon’s processor. I was quite astounded by the color, contrast, and sharpness improvements I saw after just installing this AVR. I had already ordered a laser projector, but now I’m not so sure that was necessary! If all of your HDMI cables aren’t 8K compliant, you may have to upgrade them. I had video drop-outs on my 4K Bluray player, and my Nvidea Shield until I upgraded the cables. I’m also not sure how/if Denon has a better Audessy sound calibration included in this AVR, but the detail of the vocals and music, and the calibration for my home theater sounds amazingly better than with my old AVR. I have much better vocals clarity. I’m really impressed. 150 watts per channel are plenty to drive my Klipsch Cornwalls! I thought I was maybe wasting $ ordering this flagship AVR, but after experiencing its performance, I have no regrets!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Great ReceiverThe X8500H is a great receiver which supports all the current standards and the upgradability to support many future codecs. There are so many HDMI inputs you will never run out. The scaler works well making my poor Comcast signal look good scaled up to 4K. While the receive outputs a lot of power it is not really enough to power my SVS Ultra Towers which have built-in dual 8″ subs. The receiver goes thermal when playing longer tracks with heavy bass. If you are using standard smaller fronts you will not have a problem. There is plenty of power to run a more standard 7.1.6 or 9.1.4 config.

Sometimes You Get What You NeedI bought this unit to replace an Onkyo that died well before its time. Sometimes you get what you need, because I can’t find a single thing about the 8500 that isn’t significantly or vastly better than the Onkyo. When you need a feature, it’s there, and it works beautifully. The auto room setup was much better, providing excellent speaker distance calculations, and a much larger sweet spot than I could ever get before. The distance adjustments can be manually adjusted if a different stereo image focus is desired, and the MultiEQ Room equalization can be fine tuned with the Audyssey MultEQ Editor App. You’ll need a stylus to make fine adjustments if you run the MultiEQ Editor on a phone. I added an AC Infinity AIRCOM T9 fan unit for temperature control, and it works well. If the amp is working hard enough to need higher T9 fan speeds, the volume covers the sound of the fans. If you have a complex setup, or an upcoming expansion, this is the one.
