As the first episode began, a police officer was seen running after a lorry that had driven out of a worksite.

As the lorry sped down the road to escape being caught by the police, a workman on his phone was paying no attention and walked in front of the oncoming vehicle.

With the lorry gradually getting closer, another worker saw the potential devastation and boldly jumped in front of it to save his life.

However, as the actor looked to jump in front, it became obvious to viewers that the stunt was done with a dummy.

As a result, Twitter soon became a switchboard for complaints, with many ridiculing the scene as “cheap and nasty”.

Alongside an angry-faced emoji, one viewer wrote: “Come on ITV, increase your special effects budget – you could tell that was a dummy.”

Echoing their comments, someone else said: “ What a shocking start to Vera. Cheap and nasty stunt work and special effects.”

A third added: “Not going to lie, I expected better from those behind Vera. That stunt was so obviously a dummy.”

Viewers were also quick to complain about the quality of the Geordie accent on the beloved crime show.

Superfans were beyond excited to get stuck back into finding out who killed Jim Tullman.

But that excitement dulled quickly when they couldn’t get past Oscar-nominated actress Brenda Blethyn‘s attempt at a northeastern accent.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “There’s been a murder on Vera. Somebody has murdered the Geordie accent.”

Vera airs Sundays at 8pm on ITV.
