Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, is, as one might expect, full of glorious music but it has a reputation of being difficult to stage effectively. This is mainly due to having a good deal of spoken dialogue breaking up the arias and a storyline that is not well developed. In its attempts to solve these problems, however, this new production at Glyndebourne makes matters much worse.
