Severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect in parts of Georgia, including the Atlanta metro area, according to the National Weather Service

On Monday morning, the NWS issued a tornado warning in Atlanta and East Point, Georgia, and said penny-sized hail could also hit. The agency also asked residents to seek shelter. 

The warning has been expired, but a tornado watch was issued for Georgia and Alabama until 4 p.m, the National Weather Service said. 

ABC 33/40 News meteorologist Taylor Sarallo said on Twitter that the tornado is moving through “very populated areas” and “directly towards Atlanta.”

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms tweeted fallen trees in her neighborhood in Southwest, Atlanta.

The Atlanta Fire Rescue tweeted that they responded to calls of trees down at a neighborhood in Atlanta. 

“Atlanta Fire has responded to a number of calls for trees down along the CASCADE RD corridor,” the department said. “Units are out assessing damage. As of now no reports of any significant injuries or trees down on homes at this time. Use CAUTION as falling trees and limbs still pose a threat.”

According to NBC Atlanta anchor Cheryl Preheim, Atlanta Public Schools students are currently sheltering in place. NBA basketball team Portland Trailblazers who are set to play the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night said they evacuated.

Fox 5 Atlanta reporter Rob DiRienzo tweeted the damage and debris in Fulton County.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Georgia Power said more than 4,000 residents are without power.
